Sleep Tips For These Trying Times

Summer has moved on but the unease of 2020 seems to refuse to let loose. The pandemic keeps trucking on, extreme weather has caused hurricanes and tropical storms, the west coast fires have smoked out large parts of the continent, and racial injustice continues to wreak havoc on our urban centres but; rest assured, we're going to get through it all. One of the most important components of keeping our moods up is: you guessed it, sleep. In a boring world, I'm assuming sleep would be easier, but seeing as this is earth and it's 2020, nothing  is as simple as it should be. At Sleepenvie, we're masters of sleep so we want to share some tips to get to sleep, and stay asleep during these trying times.


Keep a Regular Sleep Routine

It may sound like a simple fix but if you get into a daily sleep regiment, your mind and body will get with the schedule. You could be an extremist and develop a seven step program in going to bed, but just a few nightly activities may be enough. Some of these activities may be washing your face, sipping a nice cup of chamomile, or reading a few chapters of your latest greatest book. For you over achievers, you could always do some pre bed yoga, take some time to clear your head with some meditation, or even an early night workout or jog, as long as you save time for a shower, no one likes a stinky sleeper.

Stay Healthy

As we are restricted from many of what we used to call "normal" activities due to seemingly never-ending global pandemic, it's easy to get carried away in over indulging in some of our comfort habits such as over eating, drinking too much,  watching too much TV, and being an overall couch potato. Yes, at sleepenvie we do have some super comfortable sofas, but it's probably not best to live on them. If you're going to have a snack why not make it a healthy one? Drinking too much is always a problem, unless its water! An easier way to make this switch may be to turn to sparkling water. Grocery store shelves are full of new and exciting brands and flavours! TV is the easiest way to unwind and we understand, but why not watch some documentaries to grow your mind vs numb it while watching reality shows. As far as the couch potato problem goes, take some sitting time and sub it for some yoga or simple stretches, no need to be over strenuous to stay healthy. All of these things are great practices to stay on the healthy side, and a healthy body always sleeps better!

Don’t Be A Bed Log

This may sound like a weird statement coming from a mattress company, and yes we do understand that staying in a Sleepenvie all damn day is the BEST, but you know what they say about too much of a good thing. If you wake up on a weekend with the mindset of staying in bed all day, you just might (especially with one of our beds). It's important to wake up and seize the day! There are plenty of fun and safe fall activities you can do! Go for a fall foliage drive, rake some leaves, carve a pumpkin, go get pumpkin spiced everything, and that's just to name a few!

Avoid Caffeine in the Afternoon

This may sound like a no brainer to many, but that doesn’t make it any less important. Yes it's fall and there is not much better than a nice warm cup of coffee or tea in the afternoon, but there was this wonderful invention in the year 1900, it's called decaf, (we dare you to fact check us) "The first commercial decaffeination process was invented in 1900 by Ludwig Roselius." (New York Times, Florence Fabricant,1984). Now that we got our scholarly research out of the way, now is a perfect time to mention tisane tea. Its warm, southing, and ideally caffeine free! If you really want a relaxing experience, add some honey (or whiskey, but not too much) for a southing and satisfying beverage.

Booze in Moderation

We would love to say don’t drink at all, however, as we have stated many times it is 2020. After a stress filled day working at home or out of an office, there isn't much better than relaxing with your favorite adult beverage. We are NOT saying you should cut that off entirely, we're simply suggesting you indulge in moderation. Take red wine for instance. They say a glass or two a day could be good for your heart! However, results may vary when you're subbing glasses for bottles and bottles for boxes. That being said, if you and a couple friends do decide to have a nice mid day picnic, Franzia just introduced a wine box backpack, which we think is pretty neat but again, enjoy in moderation.
