Sleep and weight loss are related for many reasons. Sleep is important for good health, but it can also help with your weight loss efforts. Here's how:
Sleep deprivation has been shown to increase hunger, leading to increased calorie consumption. This can be attributed to the fact that sleep deprivation decreases leptin (a hormone that tells your brain when you're full), while increasing ghrelin (a hormone associated with hunger).
Sleep deprivation also leads to decreased fat burning and increased fat storage. One study found that people who slept less than 6 hours per night had higher levels of insulin resistance (which increases risk for diabetes), higher blood pressure, and larger waist circumference compared with those who slept 7-8 hours per night.
Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the number of calories you burn when you are at rest. It's the same thing as your resting metabolic rate (RMR), which is how many calories you would burn if all other factors were equal and there was no activity or exercise involved.
In order to lose weight, it's important to increase your BMR by 13% or more! This can be done through dieting and exercise but also through sleep! Sleep helps increase BMR by 13%. This means that if someone gets 8 hours of sleep every night for one week, they will have an increased calorie burning capacity compared to someone who only gets 6 hours of sleep each night during those same seven days.
If you're trying to lose weight, getting enough sleep is one of the most important things you can do. It helps control appetite, stress levels, and helps increase your basal metabolic rate (BMR)! While most associate weight loss with nutrition and exercise, we must not forget one of the most important pillars in weight loss either.
If you're looking to shed a few pounds and need to upgrade your sleep game, you're in the right place! Take a look at our Mattress Collection or take our Sleep Quiz to find your perfect match!

]]>When your pillow starts to look worn and lumpy, it's time to replace it. Typically, pillows should be replaced every 1-2 years, depending on how often you use them and how well you take care of them. If the pillow is unevenly filled or flat in certain areas, that's another sign that it needs replacing.
If you're waking up with allergies or sinus issues more often than usual, it's likely that your pillow is to blame.
Pillows can accumulate mold and other allergens over time that can cause respiratory problems, which can lead to increased allergies and sinus issues in people, especially those who already have them.
In addition to allergies, an older pillow can cause skin breakouts too, especially for those who have sensitive skin. It's important to remember, our pillows endure our sweat, drool, and facial oils on a nightly basis. A buildup of these can quickly and easily clog your pores!
If you wake up with a stiff neck or frequent headaches, it's time to change your pillow. Why? Because the way we sleep can affect our health in many ways. And one of those ways is by not getting enough deep sleep--which means that if you're waking up with a stiff neck or headache, then there's likely something wrong with how your body is being supported during sleep.
Pillows should be supportive but not too firm or too soft. You should have a pillow that is the right height for your body type and sleeping position so that it supports the natural curve of your neck while keeping it aligned with the spine.
Pillows are not made to last forever. They will wear out over time, and it's important to replace them before the effects of this wear become noticeable. It's not just about comfort and convenience; it's also about your health. As we've discussed, there are many ways that a poor-quality pillow can affect how well you sleep at night--and these effects can be felt in other aspects of life as well!
If all seems lost and you don't know where to begin, start by checking out Our Pillow Collection. From the fully customizable Fomo Pillow to the beauty-inspired Skyler Pillow, we're bound to have a pillow for you.
The most important thing is that you make sure whatever choice you make is right for YOU; after all, there is no one size fits all solution when it comes down to finding comfort in bedtime rituals.

]]>This post will help guide you through identifying some of those features and how they can impact how well your child sleeps at night—and all day long!
When you're shopping for a mattress for your child, there are a few things to keep in mind.
First of all, the size of the bed is important. If you buy a full-size mattress for your young child and he or she grows into it before they need another one, that's going to be annoying! So make sure to get something small enough that will fit as they grow: twin beds are usually best until around age 10; full-sized beds after that point (or sooner).
The firmness and softness of any given mattress will depend on what type of sleeper you have--some people prefer softer mattresses while others like firmer ones--but generally speaking, you want to aim for a firm and supportive mattress.
Another thing worth mentioning is thickness; some parents may choose thicker mattresses because they feel more comfortable sleeping on them, but this isn't always necessary since most children don't weigh enough yet anyway. You can typically aim for something in the 5" to 8" range.
It's important to remember that a good mattress is an investment in your child's health and well-being. As such, spending a little more on a quality mattress will last longer than a cheap one, as well as being safer for your child. The right bed can help them sleep better, feel more comfortable and enjoy better overall health throughout their lives.
However, it's also important to remember that it's not just about how much money you spend but how much value you get out of what you pay for! If we were only concerned with price then we'd all be sleeping on cardboard boxes with pillows made out of rocks! So, as with any long-term purchase, it's important to do your own research and ask questions before coming to a final decision!
If you're currently looking for a new mattress for your child, you don't need to go too far to find one! Sleepenvie's Rogan Mattress is a great choice for most children. It features gel memory foam that provides optimal support and heat dispersion that keeps your child cool and comfortable throughout the night. In addition, all our mattresses are made with quality materials and are CertiPUR-US approved for added security and peace of mind.
If you have any questions or reservations regarding your child's mattress, please don't hesitate to contact us. We're here to help and we're happy to do it!

]]>When you're sleep deprived, your focus, attention, and productivity suffer.
Your brain isn't able to process information as quickly or accurately.
You find it more difficult to concentrate on the task at hand.
The quality of your work suffers because of this lack of focus.
The bottom line: If you think about the tasks that make up an average workday—reading emails and reports; writing documents; making phone calls; checking social media—you can see how many essential functions require a sharp mind in order to be completed properly. There's a reason why sleep deprivation is so often associated with accidents on the job site: when people are tired, they aren't as attentive or careful as they should be while performing their duties! This can lead not only to mistakes but also physical harm for those around them who may not notice what's happening until it's too late (if ever).
A lack of sleep can also contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety, which can make it harder to focus at work. You may also have trouble coming up with new ideas for projects at work, since those who don’t get enough sleep tend to have less creative problem-solving skills and are less able to think outside the box.
Sleep deprivation can cause physical changes too: people who don’t get enough shut-eye tend to feel fatigued during the day, so they might take longer breaks throughout the day than their co-workers do—and even be tempted by a quick nap on their lunch break!
You're not alone in your sleep struggles.
Sleep deprivation is a widespread problem, with 25% of Canadians having trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep. Even those who aren't officially diagnosed with insomnia frequently struggle to get enough rest. If you have trouble sleeping, you're likely familiar with the feeling of being exhausted during waking hours, often for weeks at a time—and that's not just because your body needs more rest; it's also because lack of sleep can make you feel tired!
Sleep deprivation is a common issue, but it's not necessary. There are many ways to improve the quality of your sleep, so you can get the rest and energy you need to excel at work and in life.
If you're not sleeping well right now—or if you want to improve your sleep—try these tips:
Establish regularity by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends.
Relax before bed with a warm bath or shower (or a hot cup of tea!). This will help prepare your body for sleep by slowing down heart rate and blood pressure, relaxing muscles, easing stress, and calming the mind.
Keep electronics out of the bedroom; they emit blue light which interferes with melatonin production – making it harder for you to fall asleep! If necessary, try using software and apps that change screen colors throughout the day so that nighttime viewing won't be as disruptive!
Invest in a quality mattress and pillow that suits YOUR needs. Whether you're a hot sleeper, suffer from back pain, or just simply prefer a plush mattress, there's always an option for you. Don't settle for a one-mattress-fits-all solution.
If you're ready to take back control of your sleep and your day, there are some things you can do. First, prioritize sleep over other activities that aren't as important. Put away screens before bedtime and make sure to avoid caffeine after noon. If possible, try going on vacation for a week or two so that you can really reset yourself from work stressors (and get some extra rest!). Finally, when it comes down to it - remember that sometimes the best thing is just getting enough hours in one night without fail!

]]>Darkness signals to your body that it's time to sleep, so invest in room-darkening shades or an eye mask if needed.
The ideal sleep temperature is around 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the room cool by ensuring adequate ventilation, using a fan or air conditioning in hot climates, and use quality bedding for temperature regulation.
Investing in a high-quality mattress and pillow can make a big difference in the comfort of your sleep. More importantly, a mattress and pillow that suits your needs, habits, and preferences. You're in luck though, you've come to the right place!
It's best to avoid screens for at least an hour before bedtime. The blue light emitted by electronic screens can interfere with the production of the sleep hormone melatonin.
Noise can disrupt sleep, so consider using a white noise machine or earplugs if needed.
Establishing a relaxing routine before bed can help condition you to consistently wind down and prepare for sleep. This could include activities such as reading a book, taking a warm bath, or practicing deep breathing exercises.

]]>Have you noticed yourself getting tired early in the evening? Is it more difficult to get up early in the morning?
That's because, even if it's your normal time to wake up, the lack of natural light is confusing your body, making you feel extra sleepy and throwing our internal clocks out of sync with our circadian rhythm. It can be very disruptive and often happens with Daylight Savings Time. It's a feeling comparable to jet-lag.
Follow our six easy steps to help reset and sync your internal clock back up to your circadian rhythm:
]]>All of this darkness has a way of messing with our internal clocks as natural light hugely impacts our circadian rhythm, also known as our sleep/wake cycle.
Have you noticed yourself getting tired early in the evening? Is it more difficult to get up early in the morning?
That's because, even if it's your normal time to wake up, the lack of natural light is confusing your body, making you feel extra sleepy and throwing our internal clocks out of sync with our circadian rhythm. It can be very disruptive and often happens with the time change when Daylight Savings Time ends. It's a feeling comparable to jet-lag.
Follow our six easy steps to help reset and sync your internal clock back up to your circadian rhythm:
An hour before you want to sleep, put down your phone, close your laptop and turn off the TV. The blue light that electronics emit is one of the most notorious artificial lights known for keeping us awake. By giving yourself an hour grace period before bed and reading instead of using electronics, it will help get your internal clock back on track and fall asleep more easily.
This can be tough in the fall and winter when it’s so tempting to go full hibernation-mode and layer on extra blankets but, you will have a better quality sleep if you’re not overheated, waking up sweaty and kicking off blankets in the night. All of these activities caused by over-layering your bed interrupt your REM cycle and disturb your sleep, making it harder to get the quality sleep you need in order to wake up on time and feeling rested.
Although often we do feel extra tired once Daylight Savings Time ends, it’s important to push through it and maintain your sleep/wake schedule until your body can adjust, just as you would recover from jet-lag. Your internal clock will adjust more quickly if you have a set routine that you stick to.
In the summer, the sun wakes us up. It’s much easier and more pleasant to wake up to natural light than the sound of an alarm clock because exposure to sunlight boosts our serotonin levels, a neurotransmitter associated with happiness and well-being. Invest in a light therapy alarm clock to help you wake up more naturally and/or a light therapy box to use while you’re getting ready in the morning. It will improve your energy level and help to combat SAD.
If you start to feel tired in the late afternoon or very early evening, don’t fight it--allow yourself to have a short 20-30 min power nap. Your body will tell you what it needs; if a nap is what you require to feel energized again, take a nap but limit your snooze time to 30 min or less so you can recharge while not interfering your ability to go to sleep later.
Beyond simply enjoying the beautiful fall colours, being away from the light pollution of the city is a sure-fire way to reboot your circadian rhythm and help you sync back up with your internal clock. Try to unplug and leave the electronics behind to maximize the soothing effects of nature.
By honouring our bodies’ internal clocks and syncing ourselves back up with our circadian rhythms, we can not only improve our sleep but also our moods and overall health and well-being.

]]>Get rid of the winter blues by freshening up your bedroom for spring! We can help you breathe the fresh air of the season into your bedroom decor with our six easy tips so you can wake up fresh as a daisy to the positivity of spring sunshine and fresh blooms.
Trade out heavy winter window-treatments for something sheerer so you can wake up more naturally to sunshine. After the short, dark days of winter, waking up to natural light beats an alarm clock any day! Use a pull-down blind to postpone your wake-up a few hours for sleep-in days ;).
Treat yourself to a bouquet of fresh cut flowers and put them in a vase on your nightstand. They will smell great! You can also pick up some succulents for your window ledge--they are very low maintenance to look after, they will last much longer than fresh cut flowers and they will add oxygen to your bedroom.
Trade out your cozy flannel winter sheets for lighter cotton spring sheets. The weather is getting warmer, so you won’t need such warm sheets any more.
A quick, easy and inexpensive way to bring the colours of the season into your bedroom is with throw pillows. Add a few to your bed (and put away winter throw pillows if you have them) to brighten up the room.
Bring in the scent of the season AND fall asleep more easily with the soothing effects of lavender aromatherapy. Our ultra-comfy Violet pillow is infused with lavender aromatherapy to help lull you to sleep naturally with the gentle scent of a spring day.
Get rid of winter dust, clean your windows so you can open them up and let in some fresh air, shake out rugs, replace light bulbs--do some serious spring cleaning in your bedroom so it feels bright and new again. It will feel great when it’s done!

Women. Women are notorious for getting extremely cold feet when they sleep because the nerves that control blood flow to the hands and feet are much for sensitive in women than men. This means, when your body temperature drops at night due to your circadian rhythm, blood vessels constrict, slowing the flow of warm blood to extremities, causing women’s feet to get very cold.
Men. Men are more likely to snore because they have larger airways by comparison and their larynxes are lower in the neck, creating a more sizeable space in the back of their throat. While you’re sleeping, the muscles in your throat relax and your tongue falls back into this gap--the larger the gap, the louder and more likely the snore. Therefore, while it is not impossible for women to snore, it's more likely then men will snore both more frequently and more loudly.
Women. The biological phases of their lives, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause, and the accompanying hormonal shifts that women experience mean they are more likely to suffer from disruptions to their sleep on a regular basis over their lifetime. Women are also more likely to suffer from 'racing thoughts,' which is an incredibly common cause for insomnia that can be brought on by stress and anxiety.
Men. Men typically dream more than women because dreaming happens during REM sleep, which is the deepest phase of sleep. As we’ve previously mentioned in the above question and answer, men get more deep sleep on average than women because they generally have an easier time falling asleep and, once they are asleep, are more likely to stay asleep because they are unaffected by hormonal changes in the body that women are affected by such as menstruation and menopause.
Women. Sleep is a time when our brains are very active and also regenerate from the days’ activities. Because women’s brains expend more mental energy during the day, they require more sleep to recharge.
Men. Because women require more sleep to adequately recharge their brains from the previous days’ activities, they have a tougher time with sleep deprivation and often report more anger, hostility and depression than men who’ve had the same amount of sleep. That said, long term sleep deprivation isn’t good for the physical or mental health of men or women.

This is because you’re not allowing your body enough time to do all the work it needs to in order to prepare you for the next day.
Our advice: give your body enough time to do all of its work while you’re sleeping so that you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle your day.
Here are six amazing things your body does while you’re sleeping:

This is because you’re not allowing your body enough time to do all the work it needs to in order to prepare you for the next day.
Our advice: give your body enough time to do all of its work while you’re sleeping so that you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle your day.
Here are six amazing things your body does while you’re sleeping:
While you’re asleep, your immune system releases cytokines, a protein that helps your body to fight inflammation, trauma and infection. This is why getting extra sleep while you’re sick helps you to recover. But, even when you’re not sick, it’s still important to get enough sleep so your immune system can manage and prevent inflammation or infection by releasing this protein and continue to function at its best.
During deep sleep phases, your body releases human growth hormone to help rebuild and strengthen muscle tissue. This is crucial for growing children and especially helpful for athletes.
This is a stress hormone. During your first few hours of sleep, levels begin to decrease, which helps you to wake up feeling perky or happier. By not allowing your cortisol levels to decrease, you often wake up feeling cranky.
Some parts of your brain, like those involved in processing information and emotions and learning, are more active while you’re sleeping than when you’re awake. Your hippocampus sorts through all the information you’ve taken in during the day and stores it away accordingly. This process is very important to one’s ability to problem-solve and think creatively. Your hypothalamus helps you to regulate emotions and stressors. While you sleep, it organizes the emotional information you’ve absorbed during the day, files it accordingly, and, in turn, helps you better deal with stressors and regulate your emotions. And, finally, while you’re sleeping, the amygdala helps to commit our knowledge and experience to memory. Without adequate sleep, we become very forgetful.
Just as your brain sorts knowledge and experience to help commit it to memory while you sleep, your immune system ‘remembers’ and sorts bacteria to help prevent illness and disease. Without adequate sleep, your risk of disease and serious illness becomes much higher.
Sleep directly affects hormones in your body that regulate appetite, like ghrelin, for example, which impacts weight gain. Not getting enough sleep triggers the production of this hormone as well as the stress hormone cortisol which then leads to fats stores around your belly area.

]]>To answer that question, one must consider all the factors that contribute to sleep loss, like stress, for example.
A new Sleep in the City study, conducted by national research expert Bert Sperling, ranks America's 50 most heavily populated metropolitan cities based on five criteria: the number of days in the past month that residents reported not getting enough sleep or rest, average length of daily commute, divorce rate, unemployment rate, and overall happiness index. The happiness index was derived from questions about a person's physical, mental, and emotional health.
The results were unsurprising: the cities that were best ranked for sleep had higher overall happiness scores and low unemployment rates. The cities that ranked poorly had lower overall happiness scores, higher unemployment rates and reported more stressors like long commutes and higher divorce rates.

Conquer the cold this winter with our six easy sleep tips:
]]>A good night’s sleep is especially important during the colder months so that we can keep our immune systems up so we can fight off colds and viruses that often accompany the season to be healthy, happy and successful in the new year.
Conquer the cold this winter with our six easy sleep tips:
It can be very tempting, in the coldest winter months especially, to crank the heat in your bedroom to make it extra warm and cozy to overcompensate for the chilly temperature outside--as sound as that logic may seem, the ideal sleeping temperature to keep your bedroom is 18-21’C at the most. If your bedroom is warmer than that, your sleep can become disturbed by sweating in the night and kicking off blankets. We recommend that you switch your sheets from cotton to flannel, for a cozier feel, but only use an extra blanket when needed and keep your temperature under 21’C for sleeping.
This is much easier said than done when you get home from work at 6:00 PM when it’s pitch black and freezing cold--sometimes you may just want to crawl in to warm up. The issue here is that, and many of us have fallen into this trap, it’s just so nice in there that you fall asleep and take an evening nap then have a real tough time falling asleep at bedtime. With it being so dark for so many more hours than the summer, it’s especially important to avoid extra sleep during the day and in the evening because your body is already being tricked and feeling extra tired by the lack of natural light. Try and avoid naps and hanging out in bed during the day to make it easier to fall asleep at night.
It’s very common for people to over-indulge on nighttime snacks during the winter simply because we’re stuck inside for many more hours then we would be in the summer. This increase in snacking and decrease in physical activity often results in gaining a few extra pounds over the winter months but can also seriously impact your sleep. When you’re sleeping, your body is supposed to be resting and repairing from the days' activities rather than digesting extra late-night snacks. So, to ensure you’re not compromising your quality of sleep, eat lighter in the evening and try to be done all your eating 1-2 hours before you want to sleep.
On extra cold nights, a draft from your window or from under a door can disturb peaceful sleep. Make sure you’ve made all necessary adjustments in your bedroom (covering windows, etc.) to prevent cold drafts from disturbing your sleep.
Winter air can often be dry, causing dry skin and nighttime coughing, which can wake you up and prevent you from sleeping. If you find this to be the case for you, run a humidifier in the bedroom. Now, ‘cool air’ humidifiers are available, rather than only units using steam, so you are still able to control the temperature in your bedroom.
It’s not a nice feeling to lay down to sleep and feel physically restless. For those who don’t like going out in the cold, it can be difficult to hit your ‘step goal’ for the day and get the activity you need to tire you out at night. If you find this to be an issue during the cold winter months, try an exercise app at home, go to a mall or large indoor public space to walk around or join a gym. It doesn’t have to be outdoor exercise, but daily exercise is very important to get quality sleep.

]]>Thankfully, the very technology that has been keeping us up can also deliver some awesome apps to help you get the sleep you need.
Here are our top picks:
]]>Today, there are more distractions than ever keeping us awake at night. Between Netflix binges, Insta scrolling, online shopping, and late-night texting, it’s a wonder we get any sleep at all.
Thankfully, the very technology that has been keeping us up can also deliver some awesome apps to help you get the sleep you need.
Here are our top picks:
Calm is an app designed for meditation and mindfulness to help you manage anxiety, lower your stress level and, most importantly, get to sleep. How does it help you sleep? Bedtime stories. Their philosophy is that we enjoyed them when we were small so why should we give them up as adults? You can choose from many different soothing stories ready by calming voices to help you unwind and let go of whatever to-do list is keeping you awake so you can fall into a deep sleep. Personally, I was very sceptical that this would work before I tried it--now, it’s my go-to.
Breethe, only available from the Apple app store, was selected as the Best New App by Apple in 95 countries. Mindfulness coach Lynne Goldberg and other New York Times bestselling personal growth experts help you to fall asleep using sleep music playlists, nature sounds, guided meditations, bedtime readings and even hypnotherapy.
Rather than focusing mainly on helping you fall asleep at night, Tide also tackles naps and gentle wake-ups. To use the app, you select ‘sleep’ or ‘nap,’ set your wake-up time and then a lullaby of nature sounds helps you drift off. When it’s time to get up, you begin to hear morning sounds like birds chirping along with a mild alarm.
Sleep Better is a comprehensive sleep tracker that allows you to track your sleep cycle. Just set it next to your pillow in bed and it will collect data about your sleep cycle overnight and wake you up at the optimal time with its smart alarm clock feature. You can analyze the data the app collects nightly to learn which daily habits will help you to get a better sleep in the short-term, and then, once you have more data, you can review your long-term stats.
Deep Sleep and Relax Hypnosis, by the creators of Mindifi, help you tackle many sleep issues through the use of hypnosis such as nightmares, insomnia, snoring, waking up earlier, falling back to sleep, power naps, stress and more.
Pzizz utilizes the scientific principles of psychoacoustics to create dreamscapes that are designed to help you to fall asleep faster, stay asleep and then wake up feeling restored and energized. You can customize the length of your listening and the app will learn what sounds you like and dislike overtime to give you the best experience possible.
Visit the app store and check out our favourites to help you get the sleep you need. Sweet dreams!

]]>Of course, it's always easier to wake up in the morning when you've had enough sleep. To get this right, think about the time you need to wake up and count backwards by eight hours and then an additional one to two hours to allow yourself time to wind down and fall asleep--this is the time you should be going to bed at night. Once you get used to a regular bedtime and wake up time, your body will get used to it, and it will make falling asleep and waking up easier.
Set your coffee maker to start brewing five minutes before your alarm goes off so it's ready when you get up. It’s a nice smell to wake up to first thing in the morning and having something to immediately look forward to definitely helps to motivate you to get up. Plus: coffee!
Invest in an alarm clock that wakes you up primarily with light (with sound as a backup). It feels more natural and is more pleasant than the buzzing alarm we have all grown to detest. Or, set your existing alarm to music instead so it's less jarring.
By keeping slippers and a nice fuzzy robe next to your bed, you can make the physical transition of coming out from under the covers less chilly and shocking. Do whatever works for you to be comfortable and cozy when you get up.
It feels good and it wakes up your muscles (that have also been sleeping all night). Stretching loosens and realigns your muscles, helps circulations, gets your blood flowing, relieves stress and physically engages your body to help you wake up.
Give yourself 10 minutes of 'you time' to check social media or email, eat at home (rather than on the run), workout or do whatever you want to do. It's not so much time that you need to wake up much earlier but it's enough time to catch your breath and take a moment in the rush a morning routine to relax, breathe and go into your day less-stress and mentally prepared.
We hope these tips help you to have a more pleasant morning and set the tone for an excellent day. Sweet dreams, Sleepenvie.

]]>If you don’t go to sleep at the same time, make an agreement that the one who is up later will wait one hour before coming into the bedroom and/or turning on lights and making extra noise. This allows your partner to drift off into a deeper sleep so they won’t wake or stir so easily with you crawling in and it helps to avoid interrupting a REM cycle.
This doesn’t mean giving up late-night TV watching altogether, just try to do it in a different room. This will minimize blue-light interfering with your sleep and gets you into a routine reinforcing that when you go to bed it’s time to relax with your partner and sleep.
Eye masks are great for this! Particularly if one of you likes to read before going to sleep. With an eye mask, one of you can read without disturbing your partner as they try to drift off. It also makes the morning less disruptive if you and your partner don’t wake up at the same time and one of you needs to turn a light on in the morning to get dressed.
This is the trickiest to put into practice because, during the fall and winter months,
Now that there’s two of you, start talking to each other about who is washing the sheets and when. This is very easy to put into practice and pays off so you don’t strip the bed and wash the sheets right after your partner has just done the same thing AND so you don’t accidentally go a month without washing them at all. Washing the sheets once a week is ideal to get rid of body oil and keep them fresh.
Unfortunately, the reality of sharing a bed every night means it’s not all cuddles and kisses all the time; there can be any number of sleep-interrupting complications on a nightly basis like blanket-hogging, snoring, sleep talking, etc.. The most important thing is to communicate with your partner to solve any sleep issues that come up right away so you can avoid compounding sleep loss and growing animosity and solve the issue before either of you losses more sleep, literally, over the issue. Compromise, communicate and get the sleep you need to be at your best.

]]>Once you find a mattress that you get used to and like sleeping on, it can be hard to know when it’s time to part ways. The average lifespan of a good quality mattress is 7-10 years and will eventually start to break down and become affected by the wear and tear of nightly use. Every night our faithful mattresses support the weight of our bodies while we rest; after years of nightly compression, eventually, even a great mattress will no longer be able to provide the support you need which will eventually lead to aches and pain and, ultimately, loss of sleep.
So, beyond simply the broad 7-10 year ballpark, how do you know when it’s time to get a new mattress? Here are six major indicators:
The easiest indicators to identify are ones that you can clearly see and/or touch such as sagging, lumps or a spring that has broken or popped up. Sometimes it happens suddenly and sometimes it happens over time. If and when this does occur, it can make your bed almost unbearable to sleep on and a new mattress is definitely an order.
A tougher indicator to identify is one that you can’t see on the mattress but feel in your body. If you go to sleep at night and frequently wake up in the morning with pain, often we can attribute it to external factors or simply write it off as having ‘slept wrong.’ If this is happening a lot, keep track and, if you can rule out external factors, most likely it is your mattress that is causing you pain. When you are looking for a new mattress, make sure that it is compatible with your sleep habits and recommended for any other pain you might be having or looking to avoid.
Due to compression and age, mattresses become firmer and harder over time. Does anyone else remember sleeping at a relative’s place with a rock-hard guest room bed? That’s why. If you prefer a more plush mattress and eventually find yourself having trouble sleeping, consider how old your mattress is; if it’s near the end of its lifespan, it likely becomes firmer, upsetting your sleep.
Dust mites,
So far we’ve covered indicators that come from the mattress, but there are also factors that come from us. You may need a new mattress because there is no longer enough room for you to sleep comfortably due to an expansion in your family (moving in with your partner, children climbing in with you, and/or getting a pet). Realistically, any addition at all means you are sharing your space. It’s important that no matter who or how many are sharing your bed, that you always have enough space to get good sleep, so this may mean upgrading the size of your mattress.
Another external factor can come from a change in our lifestyle. If you have taken up playing sports and rely on sleep for athletic recovery your needs change. If you move to a hotter climate and find you can’t sleep because of increased temperature, your needs change. If you were injured, your needs can also change. The most important thing is to always listen to your body and make adjustments accordingly.
I hope these indicators are helpful in identifying when it’s time to get a new mattress so you can get the sleep you need to be at your best.
