Is there anything better than waking up rested and refreshed from a great night’s sleep? You wake up smiling before you even open your eyes.
The physical, mental and emotional benefits of sleep have become a very popular topic of discussion over the last year or two. It is a well-established belief, and I think we can all agree, that a better quality of sleep can significantly contribute to a better quality of life. You’re happier, healthier and less stressed when you’re well-rested. And, who doesn’t want to wake up smiling?
The issue with this is last year, Global News reported that Canada and the US are tied for the third most sleep-deprived countries in the world; with 31% of survey respondents reporting they don't get enough sleep.
So, herein lies the challenge: how do we achieve that ever-elusive peaceful sleep that many of us are lacking? Cutting down on caffeine, having a bedtime routine, going to bed at the same time every night and keeping technology out of the bedroom are all helpful and important for good sleep hygiene, but, during our research into the science of sleep, we uncovered an age-old sleep solution that's merits, as they apply to sleep, are often overlooked.
We considered the reality of what we do in the bedroom, which got us wondering, how do our sex lives impact our sleep quality?
To understand the complex relationship we have with sex and sleep, we asked doctor, author, TV personality and sex and relationship expert Dr Jess O’Reilly to lend her expertise.
"We have a wealth of data indicating that a good night’s sleep and a healthy sex life are positively correlated," Dr Jess explains.
This is a sleep solution that works on both a physical and emotional level.
"Physically", she describes, "sex and sleep go hand in hand, as the rush of hormones after an orgasm helps to lull you into a restful sleep."
Intimacy plays an important role as well. She explains, for example, that it's so easy to turn on the TV and play on your phone to wind down after a long days work but, although it may feel relaxing in the moment, it's ultimately not the best way to settle down for bed.
"Electronic devices detract from the presence, which is essential to feeling connected and relaxed," she says. "If you want to make your partner feel loved and appreciated, put down your phone."
Taking extra time at night for you and your partner to connect, be it physically or emotionally, strengthens your bond and helps you both feel more relaxed which, in turn, will set you up for success in achieving the dream of a perfect, sound and restful sleep; not to mention, will give you a second reason to wake up with that smile we're seeking.
The benefits of a good night's sleep don't stop there. According to the National Sleep Foundation, when you are well rested you are better able to focus and learn; you feel happier because you are better equipt to control your emotions and cope with stress; you are more productive; less hungry, and you won't get sick as often.
There are always new sleep tips and tricks emerging and smart sleep products hitting the market every day. But, before you seek out the next new thing in sleep technology, try a little tenderness. When combined with a consistent bedtime routine and other tried and tested sleep habits, a healthy sex life will (apart from the obvious benefits) help you get the great quality of sleep you are seeking and realize the vast benefits of finally getting enough sleep.
