THE SHOW MUST GO ON: What to Binge on Netflix This Fall

THE SHOW MUST GO ON: What to Binge on Netflix This Fall

Although we may not like to admit it, sadly, the summer is slowly drawing to a close and Labour Day Weekend is right around the corner. Right behind it: fall.

Prime curl-up-in-bed-or-on-the-couch-and-get-cozy-season! Bring on the Netflix, baby!

We don’t want you to head into the season unprepared, so we’ve compiled a list of binge-worthy shows to check out. Enjoy!

Drama: Mindhunter

Set in the USA in the 1970s, Mindhunter is a drama/crime thriller about the FBI and their new Serial Crime Unit. The show is based on a true crime novel written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker, so it’s based on real events. It’s centre around two FBI agents who interview infamous serial killers who have been caught to try to understand why they committed their crimes so they catch the ones still on the loose. It’s a drama full of suspense! If ever there’s been a show that will make you say, “okay, just one more episode,” it’s this one. Season two was just released on Netflix last weekend.

Historical: The Last Kingdom

If you liked Game of Thrones, you’ll love this! The Last Kingdom has all the best GOT components but is based on real events. It takes place in the 9th century AD when England was divided into seven kingdoms and chronicles the adventures of Uhtred of Bebbanburg. It’s got a monarchy that you’ll love to hate, Viking invaders, a forbidden love-interest and more!

Reality/Game Show: Awake

Did you know that being awake for more than 17 hours at once leaves you as impaired as having 2.5 drinks would? Sleep really is the glue that holds it all together. On this new game show, contestants stay awake for 24 hours prior to competing on the show to win a million dollars. To win the money, they have to complete a series of mental and physical challenges--the funny part is, many of the challenges would be easy for a normal person to complete if they were rested but become very difficult if you’re sleep-deprived. How would you perform while suffering from sleep deprivation?

Dark Comedy: Russian Doll

Imagine a darker R-rated Groundhog day with a twist ending: that’s Russian Doll in a nutshell. Lead character Nadia, played by Natasha Lyonne, is an eccentric young woman who is supposed to be the guest-of-honour at a New York party but gets stuck in a mysterious loop and, night after night, attends the same party, dies at the end of each night only to wake up unharmed back at the beginning of the very same party. How does she break her loop? You’ll have to watch to find out.

Sci-Fi: The 100

Speaking of TV shows that are a little out there… The 100 is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama in which a nuclear Armageddon destroys civilization on Earth and the only human survivors fled to 12 international space stations in orbit. The story begins three generations into living on the space stations; resources are running out and they can’t stay up there much longer so they decide to send a group of 100 juvenile prisoners back to Earth to test its habitability. I know, it’s a lot, right? But, the story of the 100 will pull you in! Imagine re-establishing life on Earth after a nuclear Armageddon; oh, the possibilities, the dangers and the adventure...

Cartoon for Grownups: F is For Family

If you like Bill Burr’s standup, you’ll love his show. F is For Family is an animated late-night comedy inspired by Bill Burr’s own upbringing in the suburban USA in the 1970s. It’s built around the life and times of the Murphy family: Dad is a short-tempered army vet that works a crappy airport job, Mom is getting bored with being a homemaker and wants to get back into the workforce again by selling Tupperware, and the three kids have typical lives of kids at that time riding bikes, playing with neighbourhood kids, dealing with bullies and playing in a band. It’s teeming with nostalgia and laugh-out-loud moments. You have until 2020 to catch up before the release of season four.
